Association of Claustrophobia in Patients Referred for MRI with Premature Termination of Examination and Limited Study Acquisition: A Cross-Sectional Study in Rawalpindi City
Abstract
Objective: To find the association of claustrophobia with premature termination of examination or limitedstudy acquisition in Magnetic Resonance Imaging examination.Study Design: A cross-sectional study.Place and Duration of Study: The study was conducted in the Department of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) at Pak Emirates Military Hospital (PEMH) Rawalpindi, Pakistan from August 2022 to February 2023.Methods: Patients were asked to fill out a self-made claustrophobic questionnaire. Data regarding prematuretermination and limited study acquisition was taken from a magnetic resonance imaging technologist. Data wasanalyzed by using 26 version of the Statistical Package of Social Sciences (SPSS). Relative frequencies ofquantitative variables were calculated. P value was calculated by using Chi-square analysis. Results: The frequency of the claustrophobia was 6% (9 out of 150). Around 2.7% of male patients wereclaustrophobic while 3.33% of female patients were noted to be claustrophobic through the claustrophobicquestionnaire. The incidence of premature termination of Magnetic Resonance Imaging examination wasnoted in 4.67% while 1.33% was included in limited study acquisition. Conclusion: Conclusively, the termination rate was high in the claustrophobic cases which can cause the loss ofresources so a prescreening may be advised to the cases for proper utilization of the Magnetic ResonanceImaging and time of the consultant.

How strong is the evidence?
Evidence Hub reads this as a cross-sectional, done in people. Its evidence level is 4 of 5 (Low · observational). Observational designs can show an association but not prove cause.
