Cordova-Hernandez, Thyroid Clinic Co author, Endocrinology, General Hospital of Mexico Dr. Eduardo Liceaga Introduction: The coexistence of Crohn's disease and autoimmune thyroid disease in uncommon. The rate of Graves' disease in patients with Crohn's disease is unknown in detail. However, the reported prevalence can range between 0.3 % 0.9%. Case Description: A 33yearold female, nonsmoker, was admitted to the emergency department with history of fever, odynophagia, hyporexia, abdominal pain and diarrhea for which she had been previously given several antibiotics. She had been diagnosed with Graves’ disease two years prior but had poor adherence to treatment. Four months prior she was restarted on thiamazole 30 mg and propranolol 60 mg because of worsening of symptoms. She had family history of systemic lupus erythematous and rheumatoid arthritis. Upon physical examination blood pressure was 80/50 mm/hg , heart rate 108 bpm, temperature 38.7 C . She had bilateral exophthalmos, aphthous stomatitis and non tender goiter. Abdominal exam was significant for diffuse tenderness. Laboratory workup revealed her white blood cell count was 2100 ml with 4.9 % neutrophils and 93.3 % lymphocytes. Her hemoglobin was 9.90…
How strong is the evidence?
Evidence Hub reads this as a case series, done in people. Its evidence level is 5 of 5 (Very low · case / narrative / animal / in vitro / in silico). Case reports, narrative reviews, and animal, cell or computer-model studies give the weakest evidence for human health.
