Abstract

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disorder and the leading cause of dementia.Infections are frequent causes of hospitalisation in persons with AD, and both infections and associated hospitalisations contribute to long-term cognitive and functional decline. However, there is limited research on the incidence of infections and the accumulation of hospital days before and after AD diagnosis, as well as infection risk factors in persons with AD.This thesis aims to investigate the incidence of hospital-treated infections, hospitalisation following antibiotic initiation, and pneumonia risk factors in persons with and without AD.The basis of this thesis is the nationwide Medication Use and Alzheimer's Disease (MEDALZ) cohort, which comprises 70,718 communitydwellers diagnosed with AD between 2005 and 2011.Persons with AD were identified from the Special Reimbursement Register, which includes information on drug reimbursements for chronic diseases. In addition to AD, most comorbidities were retrieved from this register. An equal number of comparison persons without AD were identified and matched with persons with AD by age, sex, and region of residence.More data on comorbidities as well as infection diagnoses were retrieved from the Care 8 Register for Health Care, including hospital days. The Prescription Register was utilised to identify antibiotic purchases in Study II and the use of reimbursed drugs in all studies. In Study I, the incidence of infections…

How strong is the evidence?

Evidence Hub reads this as a cohort study, done in people. Its evidence level is 3 of 5 (Moderate · trial / cohort / secondary analysis). Trials without a large randomized design, cohorts and secondary analyses give moderate evidence.

How the five levels of evidence work. The level is assigned automatically from the abstract and can be wrong, so check the paper.
