Nonlinear quantum electrodynamics of Compton backscattering radiation
Abstract
In this chapter, the quantum dynamics of a relativistic electron under the action of an intense plane wave is studied, introducing the so-called Volkov states of the Dirac equation. Afterwards, the Volkov wave functions are used to calculate the radiation emitted in a Compton backscattering process. This approach is also known as Furry picture (or Furry representation), where the electron is fully embedded in the field of the intense wave during the whole process of photon emission. Particular attention is also given to spin-flip radiation and direct deceleration regimes of head-on electron–photon collisions.
