Abstract

Introduction: This work brings an interesting innovation in terms of using a dermatological formula to be applied before radiotherapy sections (The Pre-Radiotherapy Topical Radioprotective Cream - PTR) aiming to modify biologic spaces to reduce Compton effect in skin, minimizing formation of unstable chemical species and mitigating biological damage such as radiodermatitis. Objective: This study aims to validate the efficacy of a pre-radiotherapy topical radioprotector in reducing side effects for cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy. Methods: This pilot clinical trial involved women with breast cancer scheduled for intensity-modulated radiotherapy, with daily doses of 4.005 or 4.806 Gy. Clinical evaluations during radiotherapy utilized a consensus of radiodermatitis rating scales. Results: No patient exhibited adverse reactions using PTR product in any session. Regarding patients, 85% experienced grade I radiodermatitis, 5% grade II, 5% grade III, and 5% showed no radiodermatitis. All patients experienced delayed onset of erythema during treatment. Conclusion: The PTR cream suggests potential radioprotective effects in breast cancer patients undergoing external beam radiotherapy. This protection is dose-dependent and directly correlated to reduction of Compton Effect.
