Development of a Biophysical Treatment Planning System for the FRM II Neutron Therapy Beamline
Abstract
Since April 2005, tumour patients have been treated at the FRM II. The aim of the present work was to implement the basis for a new biologically assessed treatment planning. The Monte Carlo program GEANT4 was used for this purpose for the first time after extensive test calculations for neutron transport at low energies. To improve the initial data on the neutron spactrum, it was measured inside the therapy room with a Bonner sphere spectrometer. Test calculations inside a voxelised computer water phantom resulted in a excellent agreement with depth dose curves measured in the phantom. The HMGU(-ICRP) voxel phantom, based on CT-scans of a human being, was implemented in GEANT4. For the first time, it was then used to calculate absorbed dose and biologically weighted dose with three different weighting functions for neutrons and photons in the case of the field of a salivary gland tumour.
