A three-dimensional photoelastic study of stresses around reinforced outlets in pressure vessels
Abstract
The three-dimensional photoelastic determination of the stresses around cylindrical outlets in spherical and cylindrical shells loaded by internal pressure is described. Several sizes and shapes of reinforcement were tested to study the effects of certain variables and to determine an optimum design. The results are tabulated in the form of stress-concentration factors. Distribution of the principal stresses on the surfaces of the models are included. (auth)
