The energy and quantum equivalent of the röntgen
Abstract
The intensity of an X-ray beam can be measured readily in terms of the röntgen unit. It is desirable to be able to relate this accurately to the energy of the incident X-ray beam. In order to do this and to determine the number of quanta per square centimetre associated with 1 r it is necessary to know the energy required to form an ion pair in air; in addition, one must calculate the efficiency of ionization of air by X rays of given wavelength. Calculations by previous authors are not in good agreement. A correction for coherent scattering has been applied to Victoreen's absorption data which leads to good agreement with recently revised theoretical values. From these data, the energy and quantum equivalent of the röntgen are determined.
