Abstract

Magellan's Story is a nine-chapter popular science companion to the research paper Quantum Cell Theory: Passengers in the Flow. Written for educated general readers, it traces the journey from three simple observations about the nature of space to a complete geometric picture of the universe. That is, the universe is made of discrete energy cells, that cells resize under energy exchange, and that light travels at one cell per time unit. The narrative follows the structure of Ferdinand Magellan's 1519 circumnavigation: a voyage that set out with a question and returned with a fact. Here, the question is what space is made of, and the fact is that three postulates about cells derive the electron mass, the fine structure constant, the proton-to-electron mass ratio, the rotation of spiral galaxies, the age of the universe, and the resolution of the Yang-Mills mass gap, one of mathematics' seven Millennium Prize problems. Chapters cover: the cellular medium and the origin of gravity and time dilation; the universe as a radial density gradient (the Magellan); the recursive nesting of universes inside black holes; why cosmological measurements need recalibration; why spiral galaxies do not wind up; how a wave closes on itself to become an electron; how quantum mechanics and general relativity emerge as two regimes of one medium; why the periodic table is a geometric theorem; what it means that we are passengers in the flow; and how understanding changes the nature of the journey.…
