Quantum Biological Mechanisms for Energy and Communication
Abstract
K SC This paper presents a detailed, critical enquiry into biological solutions for energy conversion and intercellular communication, with particular emphasis on quantum mechanical phenomena at the cellular and subcellular levels. Drawing on advances in quantum biology, we examine quantum coherence in photosynthetic light-harvesting complexes, quantum tunneling of electrons and protons in mitochondrial respiratory chains, and bioelectric signaling networks that coordinate cellular collectives. The analysis integrates leading global research from ultrafast spectroscopy, theoretical biophysics, and developmental bioelectricity. We evaluate the functional significance, pros, and cons of these mechanisms relative to classical models and artificial technological analogues. Special attention is given to the epistemological and ontological implications arising from these findings: the emergence of quantum-informed biology challenges strictly reductionist and classical paradigms, suggesting that living systems exploit quantum effects for efficiency, robustness, and distributed information processing. While plants demonstrate remarkable energy transfer efficiencies potentially assisted by quantum search processes, and mitochondria utilize tunneling to optimise proton motive force, significant debates persist regarding the biological utility of long-lived electronic coherence in warm, wet environments.
