Limitations on the quantum yield of photosynthesis imposed by energy transfer rates
Abstract
An analysis is given for the consistency between the two bodies of evidence for the major stages of the primary conversion of light energy in photosynthesis (the excitation energy transfer within a light-harvesting antenna and the stabilization of this energy in reaction centers) that have so far been studied unrelatedly. It is shown that an 85-90% quantum yield of primary charge separation in reaction centers can be achieved only in systems optimized over the definite structural and functional parameters of a light-harvesting antenna and reaction center.
