Quantum aspects of photosynthetic energy transfer
Abstract
In this chapter, we explore the quantum dynamics of excitation energy transfer in photosynthetic units of bacteria and plants. The goal is to convince the reader that there is the very real possibility that quantum dynamics of excitons and of the structured vibrational environment provided by proteins and biomolecules positioned in them enter into a fruitful interplay that has been optimized by nature thanks to structural adaptations. To this end we will discuss some of the available experimental evidence that has emerged over the last few years, revise the theoretical considerations that have resulted from the analysis of these experimental observations, and discuss what can and cannot be concluded from it.
