Role of coherence in quantum mechanical resonance energy transfer
Abstract
Efficient energy transfer is the cornerstone of photosynthesis. Excitation energy trav- els from light-gathering antennae through protein networks such as the Fenna-Matthews- Olson (FMO) complex into reaction centers. Traditionally the excitation transfer is described as a series of hops, where quantum coherences play no role. In contrast, other approaches emphasize the long lived quantum coherences and their role in the energy transfer. This thesis thus explores the role of quantum coherences in the FMO complex through numerically exact calculations via the Hierarchical Equations of Motions, ulti- mately finding that quantum coherences have little to no effect on the excitation transfer inside the FMO complex.
