Electron Energy Levels in Magnetic Nanoparticles
Abstract
Final Report for Grant #N00014-97-1-0745. Progress is reported on (a) investigations of electron tunneling via individual "electron-in-a-box" quantum energy levels in magnetic nanoparticles, and the sensitivity of these energy levels to changes in the orientation of the particle's magnetic moment, and (b) a discovery that spin-polarized currents in magnetic multilayer samples can be used to controllably switch the orientation of magnetic layers, due to an exchange interaction between the spin-polarized electrons and the magnets rather than due to a magnetic field.
