Theory of phase separation in quantum crystal alloys
Abstract
Solid mixtures of isotopic helium separate into a He3-rich phase and a He4-rich phase at temperatures below 0.5K and near melting pressure. This phenomenon was understood since I. Prigogine as a result of the volume effect due to the different zero-point kinetic energies of the two isotopic atoms in the mixture. We propose a theory based on first principles of the quantum mechanics and this theory contains Mullin's theory as a special case.
