Novel Schiff Base Hydrogel Based on Crosslinked between Pectin Aldehyde and Amine-Terminated Cyclotriphosphazene for Drug Delivery
Abstract
Abstract Drug delivery systems became of great importance in modern medicine, enhancing the therapeutic efficacy of pharmaceutical compounds while minimizing their side effects. Derived from Schiff base crosslinking, hydrogels exhibit tunable properties, biocompatibility, and controlled drug release capability. In this present study, the new paracetamol substituted cyclotriphosphazene compounds ( MSPCT and MSHY ) were designed and synthesized. Moreover, the controlled drug release profile of the hydrogel synthesized with MSHY and pectin aldehyde ( PECALD ) was investigated. PECALD was reacted with the novel diamine terminated cyclotriphosphazene crosslinker ( MSHY ) via a Schiff-base reaction that yielded crosslinked hydrogel. Single crystal X-ray crystallography (for MSHY ), FT-IR, NMR ( 31 P, and 1 H), spectroscopies, SEM-EDX analysis (for MSHY/PECALD) and MALDI-TOF mass analysis were used to comprehensively characterize the structures of the novel compounds. The synthesized hydrogel exhibited favorable cytocompatibility toward BJ fibroblast cells and showed pH-dependent degradation behavior. Together with the controlled release results, these findings indicate the potential of the developed hydrogel system for drug delivery applications.
