Abstract

Abstract Disclosure: A.E. Perez: None. O.C. Dampil: None. Background: Long-term metformin use has been linked to vitamin B12 deficiency. Studies report varying prevalence rates.Data on the Filipino population remains lacking. This study aimed to determine the associationand risk factors between metformin use and vitamin B12 deficiency among Filipino T2DM patients. Methodology: This is a cross-sectional study which involved T2DM patients on Metformin screened for Vitamin B12 deficiency. Shapiro-Wilk test assessed normality, and vitamin B12 deficiency prevalence was computed. Logistic regression estimated odds ratios for the association between metformin use and B12 deficiency, while Spearman correlation assessed the relationship between B12 levels and metformin dose duration. Result: In this study of 369 patients with T2DM on Metformin, the prevalence of Vitamin B12 deficiency was 5.69%.Among the risk factors analyzed, only Hyperthyroidism was significantly associated with Vitamin B12 deficiency, with patients being over eight times more likely to have Vitamin B12 deficiency compared to those without hyperthyroidism (p = 0.025). In contrast, sulfonylurea use was associated with a significantly reduced risk, lowering the odds of Vitamin B12 deficiency by 89% (p = 0.034). A weak negative correlation was observed between Vitamin B12 levels and the total daily dosage of Metformin (p < 0.001) as well as the dose-duration product (p < 0.001). These findings suggest that higher…

How strong is the evidence?

Evidence Hub reads this as a cross-sectional, done in people. Its evidence level is 4 of 5 (Low · observational). Observational designs can show an association but not prove cause. Reported size: 369 participants or records.
