Seismic Performance Evaluation of Intze-Shaped Water Tanks Using Pushover Analysis
Abstract
Abstract When talking about natural calamities; earthquake stands out to be the most dangerous and life threatening one. It disrupts and damages almost all of the structures. During this seismic event and afterwards; there might be eruptions of fire; human and animal life can undergo psychological problems. To overcome all this; water is required. For providing an unwavering supply of water, elevated water tanks come as a relief. These tanks should therefore remain operative within the duration of earthquake and after it also. These tanks are constructed over the head and therefore named as overhead tanks. These are supported upon a tower or a combination of columns and bracings. The tank considered in this research is supported upon columns and braces and this type of staging is known as frame type staging. To test and thereby enhance the strength of this lifeline structure; some linear as well as nonlinear analysis are required; that too static as well as dynamic. This paper deals with the nonlinear static analysis, which is also known as pushover analysis. To assess an Intze tank's seismic performance and structural stability under lateral stresses like earthquakes and wind forces, pushover analysis is necessary. As the Intze tanks happen to be raised structures, their high center of gravity makes them extremely vulnerable to seismic effects. Also, dynamic loads that alter the structural response can be induced by the sloshing effect of water. Pushover analysis will help…
