Seismic Fragility Functions of Parameterized RC Curved Bridges Considering Stochastic Flood-induced Scouring Effect
Abstract
Abstract Flood-induced scouring can significantly affect the dynamic response and seismic performance of irregular curved bridges. Most previous research simplified the scouring effects by assuming that the riverbed line reaches the maximum possible scour depth. However, due to the uncertainty of extreme flood events, the corresponding scour depth around the foundations of curved bridges exhibits considerable randomness. It is essential to quantify the impact of scour uncertainty on the seismic evaluation of such bridges. In addition, both the seismic input angle of ground motions and the curvature radius of the curved girder can have a significant impact on the evaluation process. Consequently, this study put forward an analysis framework based on machine learning (ML) method. In this framework, the stochastic scour depth is jointly taken into account with 36 other random variables, including the curvature radius of curved girder and 140 sets of ground motions with different incidence angles, so as to develop parameterized seismic fragility models for curved bridge. A parameterized finite element model of reinforced concrete (RC) curved bridges is constructed within the OpenSees software, taking into consideration uncertainties stemming from structural design, flood-induced scour, and seismic excitation. A database composed of 1400 sets of input parameters and the corresponding engineering demand parameters ( EDPs ) is generated via Latin Hypercube Sampling (LHS) and…
