Abstract

Abstract Bangladesh is vulnerable to large earthquakes because of its location within the active Eurasia–India–Burma plate tectonic system and the widespread occurrence of thick soft sediments across the Bengal Basin. The long-period shaking of high-rise buildings in the Bangkok Basin during the 2025 MW 7.7 Myanmar earthquake highlighted the importance of understanding the response of deep sedimentary basins to far-field earthquakes. In Bangladesh, the Bangladesh National Building Code (BNBC) adopts V_S30 based seismic site characterization, where the influence of deep, soft sedimentary sequences on site response remains undermined. This study presents the regional assessment of seismic site response in terms of elastic response spectrum at nineteen sites across the Bengal Basin using one-dimensional (1D) linear simulations of two far-field earthquake ground motions and deep shear-wave (S-wave) velocity (VS) profiles derived from a previous horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) inversion study. Rather than quantifying absolute amplification, the study investigates the predominant response periods associated with the deep sedimentary sequences of Bangladesh. The reliability of the velocity models was evaluated through comparison with standard penetration test (SPT) based site classifications. Many stations exhibited dominant spectral periods approaching 1 s, exceeding the peak periods of the BNBC design spectra, with engineering bedrock depth being a controlling factor…
