Abstract

Abstract Strong earthquakes may influence the dynamics of magmatic systems and potentially affect their evolution toward eruptive conditions. Understanding the physical response of magma reservoirs to seismic shaking is therefore important for assessing volcano behaviour following large earthquakes. In this work, we present a numerical model that computes the space-time evolution of magma properties while accounting for deformation of the domain boundaries induced by seismic waves. Numerical simulations are performed for a magmatic plumbing system composed of shallow and deep magma chambers connected by a dike. Two representative magma compositions are considered, reproducing typical volcanic settings in which a more evolved and partially degassed magma occupies the shallow reservoir. The results show that seismic shaking generates transient overpressure oscillations of several MPa throughout the system. These oscillations are spatially non-uniform and are amplified within the dike, while the overall mixing dynamics and flow velocities remain largely unaffected. The response is stronger for lower-viscosity magmas, which transmit pressure disturbances more efficiently. Although the pressure oscillations decay after the passage of the seismic wave, the resulting overpressure remains significantly higher than in equivalent simulations without shaking. In some cases, peak overpressure oscillations reach approximately 5 MPa within the dike. These results indicate that seismic…
