Climate Change and Health Vulnerability in Korail and Rayer Bazar Slums, Dhaka, Bangladesh
Abstract
Abstract Urbanization is accelerating, and climate change is becoming more severe, endangering environmental health in Dhaka's informal settlements, leaving communities such as Korail and Rayer Bazar particularly vulnerable to current and future threats. The aim of this study is to assess the climate-related health vulnerability in the Korail and Rayer Bazar slums and highlight how climate risks, environmental deprivation, socioeconomic vulnerability, and adaptive capacity interact to shape health risks in the Korail and Rayer Bazar slums in Dhaka. Relevant literature was searched in Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect. The time range of the articles searched in the databases ranged from 2002 to 2026. The review highlights the primary exposure pathways from climate change to increased risk of diarrheal disease, dengue and other vector-borne diseases, respiratory illness, cardiovascular strain, heat-related illness, social and psychological distress, and delayed healthcare seeking. Important differences were identified in these two settlements. Korail is comparatively better in terms of evidence, use of NGO services, and improved infrastructure support, but Rayer Bazaar has fewer climate-health research studies and is more dependent on informal coping mechanisms. Extreme climate hazards and a lack of water, sanitation, and hygiene infrastructure, combined with precarious socioeconomic conditions, create a disproportionately high health burden in…
