Revealing the disease spectrum of acute Q fever in China's Coastal Areas: A Series Study of 11 Cases from Yantai
Abstract
Abstract Background : Acute Q fever is a global zoonotic disease caused by Benatcocos. The clinical manifestations are diverse, ranging from self-limiting fever to life-threatening infective endocarditis, often leading to misdiagnosis and delayed treatment. Although globally distributed, clinical characteristic data on the northern coastal areas of China, especially Yantai City, are still relatively scarce. Methods : The epidemiological history, previous medical history, clinical manifestations, laboratory tests, targeted high-throughput sequencing (tNGS) results, imaging manifestations, diagnosis and treatment processes, etc. of 11 patients diagnosed with acute Q fever in Yantai area from October 2024 to October 2025 were collected and retrospectively analyzed. Result : A total of 11 patients with Coxiella bursii infection were collected, with an average age of 53.9 ± 13.9 years, including 9 males. The epidemiological history includes rural residence history (5/11, 45.5%), livestock contact history (3/11, 27.7%), fishing history (2/11, 18.2%), etc. It is worth noting that all patients began with fever, and other clinical manifestations were mostly headache (9/11, 81.8%), fatigue (6/11, 54.5%), muscle and joint pain (5/11, 45.5%), and cough (4/11, 36.3%), etc. All patients had elevated levels of alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase and lactate dehydrogenase. The plasma of all 11 patients was detected with the effective sequence number of Benatcoxites (0.15-…
