Abstract

This chapter examines some of the current concerns about the possible effects of climate change on peatlands. It first considers carbon pools in peatlands before turning to greenhouse gases and radiative forcing, along with methods for studying environmental changes in peatlands. It then looks into current carbon balance in peatlands and how climate change affects peatlands, as well as the effects of drainage for forestry and agriculture. It also describes peat harvesting and the effects of climate change in permafrost regions.
