Abstract

The Asian subcontinent is recognized as the most seismically active region across all continents. Eventually, the residents in South-east Asian Region nations encountered an array of mental health disorders in the aftermath of those seismic events. The study aimed to determine the burden of mental disorders among people exposed to earthquakes in South-east Asian countries. The mental health interventions deployed after earthquake events emphasizing adaptive coping strategies were also explored. The study was registered in the PROSPERO register. Studies reporting the prevalence of mental health disorders and/or interventions following earthquake events between January 2000 and October 2023 were searched on Embase, PubMed, and Scopus databases. The risk of bias (RoB2) was assessed for the selected studies. Pooled prevalence in the meta-analysis was computed using the DerSimonian–Laird method for the random-effects model. Meta-regression was performed to evaluate sources of heterogeneity in studies. Publication bias was assessed using funnel plots and Eggers test. Among the selected 47 studies (22,996 earthquake victims), results were internally consistent in >95% of studies. Conducting structured research following seismic events presented challenges in most studies, primarily due to ethical constraints. The pooled prevalence of anxiety was 35.95%. Subgroup-wise, studies from India (58%), urban areas (47%), and community settings (44%) influenced higher anxiety. Depressive…

How strong is the evidence?

Evidence Hub reads this as a meta-analysis, done in people. Its evidence level is 1 of 5 (Highest · pooled evidence). Pooled evidence from several studies sits at the top of the evidence pyramid.

How the five levels of evidence work. The level is assigned automatically from the abstract and can be wrong, so check the paper.
