A systematic review to improve strategies selection about diabetes management and control in patients exposed to earthquakes
Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of earthquakes on diabetes and its associated complications, as well as the challenges related to the treatment and management of diabetic patients. This research is a systematic review study designed based on the PRISMA guidelines, with the objective of examining the effects of earthquakes on diabetes and the challenges in managing diabetic patients during seismic events. In this study, articles published up to December, 2024, related to earthquakes and diabetes, were included. The search was conducted in the Medline, Web of Science, Embase, and Scopus databases. The database search yielded 913 articles. After removing 366 duplicates, 547 abstracts were screened. Following the review of the abstracts, 498 articles were excluded, and full texts of the remaining 49 articles were retrieved. Among these, 7 articles were in non-English languages, and 9 additional articles were excluded after reading due to not meeting the inclusion criteria. Ultimately, 33 articles were included in the study. Earthquakes lead to poor blood glucose control. Effective management of preventable risk factors, lifestyle interventions, ensuring proper access to healthcare facilities, availability of medications and glucometers, and having a pre-planned care program delivered by trained healthcare personnel contribute to better management of diabetic patients.
How strong is the evidence?
Evidence Hub reads this as a systematic review, done in people. Its evidence level is 1 of 5 (Highest · pooled evidence). Pooled evidence from several studies sits at the top of the evidence pyramid.
