Bridging the gap: Geriatric education and public health rehabilitation in an ageing world — challenges, innovations, and future directions: A comprehensive narrative review
Abstract
Background: The world population aged 65 and above is growing faster than any other group; however, this demographic trend poses significant challenges for health systems worldwide, indicating the need to revolutionize geriatric education and public health rehabilitation services. Despite some advances made in the gerontological science such as significant gaps remain on the part of training healthcare professionals, integrating community-based rehabilitation models, and a public health policy framework for older adults. Objective: In this review, we critically assess the status of geriatric education and public health rehabilitation, highlighting key challenges, evidence-based interventions, and directions for future policy and practice.Materials and Methods: Four databases were searched for relevant publications (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and CINAHL) in the form of a narrativ review. Inclusion criteria were studies published from 2020–2025 related to geriatric education, multidisciplinary rehabilitation, community health programs and technology assisted interventions for older adults. Results: Literature shows that implementation of integrated, competency based geriatric curricula is strongly associated with improved clinical outcomes. Facilities-based models of rehabilitation result in worse recovery rates and adherence as compared to community-based participatory ones. Emerging digital health technologies such as telerehabilitation and AI-assisted monitoring.…
