Seismic Retrofitting of Structures with Advanced Composites – A Review
Abstract
Extensive analytical studies have shown that FRP (fiber reinforced polymer) in the form of jackets or overlays can be quite effective in seismic retrofit applications. When applied to RC (reinforced concrete), FRP jackets typically enhance the shear strength and increase the confinement. When applied to masonry walls, FRP overlays increase the in plane shear strength and the out of plane flexural strength considerably. Field implementation of FRP retrofit techniques has been widespread. It has been found that the techniques are economically viable, particularly where access is difficult and fast completion of retrofit is essential.
