Abstract

[Objective]To investigate the effect of metformin on the changes of ovarian morphology in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome(PCOS).[Methods]Yong and of normal body mass index patients with PCOS were administered to receive metformin treatment for 6 months.20 patients remained anovulatory(anovulatory group),while 20 patients became ovulatory but failed to conceive(ovulatory group).Another 20 age and body mass index matched patients with PCOS were included as control group. The concentrations of androgen(T),sex hormone binding globulin(SHBG),follicle stimulating hormone(FSH),luteinizing hormone(LH),estrogen(E_2),prolactin(PRL),fasting glucose, fasting insulin, homeostasis model analysis insulin resistance index(HOMA),and the fasting glucose-to-insulin ratio(GIR) were detected and calculated. And the changes of ovarian morphology and volume were observed by B-type ultrasonography.[Results]After 6 months of therapy,3(15%) cases in anovulatory group and 17(85%) cases in ovulatory group had significant ovarian morphologic changes.Compared with before treatment, ovarian volume was not significantly changed in anovulatory group [(12.2±1.2) cm~3],but was significantly decreased in ovulatory group(11.5±1.6) cm~3].[Conclusion]There were morphologic changes of ovary related to ovulatory in PCOS patients after treating by metformin.
