Abstract

This chapter provides the basic characteristics, side effects/toxicity, drug interactions, and dosage information of the AVELOX (Moxifloxacin). Moxifloxacin is indicated for the treatment of serious infections caused by susceptible strains of microorganisms in the diseases: acute bacterial sinusitis, acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, community acquired pneumonia, uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections, complicated intra-abdominal infections, complicated skin and skin structure infections. Also used for treatment of tuberculosis. Serious adverse reactions including tendinitis, tendon rupture, peripheral neuropathy, central nervous system effects, and exacerbation of myasthenia gravis. Fluoroquinolones, including moxifloxacin, have been associated with disabling and potentially irreversible serious adverse reactions that have occurred together, including tendinitis and tendon rupture, peripheral neuropathy and central nervous system effects. Discontinue moxifloxacin immediately and avoid the use of fluoroquinolones, including moxifloxacin, in patients who experience any of these serious adverse reactions.
