Conjunctival tear following bungee cord injury successfully managed with moxifloxacin 0.5% eye drops: A case report
Abstract
Background: Ocular trauma from elastic recoil injuries such as bungee cord accidents is an increasingly recognized cause of significant anterior segment damage. Conjunctival lacerations resulting from such injuries can expose bare sclera, promote secondary infection, and cause significant patient morbidity. Case Presentation: We report the case of a 32-year-old male who sustained a 12 mm nasal conjunctival tear with bare scleral exposure following a bungee cord recoil injury to the right eye. He presented with acute pain, bleeding, and periocular swelling. Slit-lamp examination confirmed the laceration without scleral perforation. Conservative management was instituted with Moxifloxacin 0.5% eye drops (Mahaflox, Mankind Pharma) four times daily, lubricant eye drops, and Azithromycin eye ointment at bedtime. Outcome: At follow-up, the conjunctival wound demonstrated complete closure with restoration of conjunctival continuity, resolution of inflammation, and significant symptomatic improvement. No surgical intervention was required. Conclusion: This case underscores the value of early antimicrobial prophylaxis with moxifloxacin and adjunctive ocular surface therapy in achieving favorable outcomes in large traumatic conjunctival tears without surgery.
How strong is the evidence?
Evidence Hub reads this as a case report, done in people. Its evidence level is 5 of 5 (Very low · case / narrative / animal / in vitro / in silico). Case reports, narrative reviews, and animal, cell or computer-model studies give the weakest evidence for human health.
