Comparing Efficacy and Tolerability of Topical Besifloxacin 0.6% vs Moxifloxacin 0.5% Eye Drops in Bacterial Conjunctivitis—A Prospective Study
Abstract
Aim: To compare the efficacy and tolerability of topical Besifloxacin vs Moxifloxacin eye drops in bacterial conjunctivitis. Methods: This prospective study aimed to compare the efficacy and tolerability of topical besifloxacin 0.6% versus moxifloxacin 0.5% eye drops in the management of bacterial conjunctivitis. A total of 150 patients were enrolled and randomly assigned to receive either besifloxacin or moxifloxacin eye drops. Results: Clinical resolution rates, time to symptom resolution, recurrence rates, and adverse reactions were assessed. Besifloxacin demonstrated superior efficacy with a higher clinical resolution rate (95.0%) compared to moxifloxacin (88.0%) (p = 0.032) and a shorter mean time to symptom resolution (4.2 vs 4.8 days, p = 0.047). Although the recurrence rate was numerically lower with besifloxacin (6.7% vs 10.7%), the difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.211). Conclusion: Tolerability profiles were comparable between the two groups, with besifloxacin showing a trend toward lower incidence and severity of adverse reactions. These findings suggest that besifloxacin may offer superior efficacy and comparable tolerability to moxifloxacin in the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis.
How strong is the evidence?
Evidence Hub reads this as a randomized trial, done in people. Its evidence level is 2 of 5 (High · randomized trial). Randomized trials of a reasonable size are the strongest single-study design. Reported size: 150 participants or records.
