Abstract

In the present work, sol–gel procedure was applied for the synthesis of mesoporous γ‐alumina nanoparticles (γ‐MNP) by means of the aluminum nitrate as precursor and two different anionic surfactants (sodium dodecyl sulfate [SDS]), and AOT (sodium bis(2‐ethylhexyl sulfosuccinate)) as a soft template in basic medium. γ‐MNP were compared by characterizing them using different analysis methods: FTIR, XRD, SAXRD, SEM, EDX, AFM, and measuring surface area by the BET method and porosity by BJH. γ‐MNP prepared using the surfactant AOT (A/m‐Al 2 O 3 ) gives a higher surface area (319.99 m 2 g −1 ), pore volume (0.557 cm 3 g −1 ), and pore diameter (6.963 nm) than the mesoporous γ‐alumina prepared using the surfactant SDS (S/m‐Al 2 O 3 ). The obtained BJH pore size distribution, average pore diameter, and the hysteresis loops of the isotherms confirmed the mesoporous nature of the two samples. The XRD analysis show that the two samples are in a crystalline form with the γ‐phase, and the (A/m‐Al 2 O 3 ) sample has smaller crystallite size (9.7 nm) than the sample (S/m‐Al 2 O 3 ). The SEM investigation showed that the two samples exhibited plate like nano‐sized particles with high and regular agglomeration in the S/m‐Al 2 O 3 sample, but the A/m‐Al 2 O 3 sample showed lowest tendency and irregular agglomeration. The effectiveness of the manufactured mesoporous alumina (A/m‐Al 2 O 3 ) as an adsorbent to eliminate levofloxacin and moxifloxacin drugs from the aqueous solution was tested.…
