Clinical and Microbiological Outcomes of Implant-Supported Hybrid Abutment Crowns in the Posterior Region as a Function of Restorative Material – Results of a 36-Month Randomized Clinical Trial
Abstract
Background: : Hybrid abutment crowns combine a prefabricated titanium base with a custom, CAD/CAM-fabricated ceramic superstructure. Despite their increasing clinical use, only limited long-term in vivo data are currently available regarding the influence of the restoration material on clinical and microbiological outcomes.
Objective:: To investigate the clinical, radiographic, and microbiological outcomes of implant-supported hybrid abutment crowns in the posterior region over 36 months as a function of crown material.
Materials and Methods:: In a single-center, randomized, controlled clinical trial with blinded data analysis, 57 patients with single-tooth implants (Camlog iSy) in the posterior region were enrolled and, after stratification by gender and edentulous region, randomly assigned to receive restorations made of hybrid ceramic (enamic, n = 28) or lithium disilicate ceramic (IPS e.max, n = 30); 57 patients (27 HC, 30 LS2) completed the 36-month follow-up and were included in the final analysis. The primary endpoint was implant survival rate over 36 months; secondary endpoints included marginal bone resorption (ImageJ), peri-implant probing depths (Florida Probe), and the subgingival microbiome (micro-iDent plus), which were assessed at baseline and after 36 months.
Results:: The implant survival rate was 100%. Marginal bone resorption was generally low and stable; a statistically significant difference was observed only for gender (mesial p = 0.033), but not for…
How strong is the evidence?
Evidence Hub reads this as a randomized trial, done in people. Its evidence level is 2 of 5 (High · randomized trial). Randomized trials of a reasonable size are the strongest single-study design. Reported size: 57 participants or records.
