Effect of Functional Movement Screen-Informed Corrective Training on Sit-and-Reach Performance in School-Aged Children: A Non-Randomized Class-Based Pretest-Posttest Study
Abstract
Abstract Objective: This study examined whether a brief, school-embedded corrective training program informed by Functional Movement Screen (FMS) principles was associated with changes in sit-and-reach performance in school-aged children. Methods: A non-randomized, class-based, two-group pretest-posttest study was conducted in one primary school in Sichuan Province, China. A total of 1,194 children from grades 2-5 were included, with 597 students in the intervention group and 597 in the control group. The intervention group completed a 12-week FMS-informed corrective training program three times per week for 10 minutes per session, integrated into physical education warm-up routines or short activity sessions. The control group continued usual warm-up activities and physical education instruction. The primary outcome was sit-and-reach performance. Within-group changes, between-group differences in change scores, responder proportions, and hierarchical regression models adjusted for sex, age, and baseline performance were used to evaluate intervention-associated changes. Results: Sit-and-reach performance increased from 8.45 ± 5.30 cm to 10.01 ± 5.51 cm in the intervention group, with a mean change of 1.56 cm (95% CI: 1.13 to 1.99; P Conclusion: A 12-week, low-burden FMS-informed corrective training program was associated with a small but statistically significant additional improvement in sit-and-reach performance in school-aged children. Trial registration: This study was…
How strong is the evidence?
Evidence Hub reads this as a randomized trial, done in people. Its evidence level is 2 of 5 (High · randomized trial). Randomized trials of a reasonable size are the strongest single-study design. Reported size: 1,194 participants or records.
