Application of a Medication Adherence Management Program Based on the Cox-Interaction Model of Client Health Behavior in Patients with Schizophrenia
Abstract
Abstract Objective To develop a medication adherence management plan for schizophrenia patients based on the Cox-IMCHB model and evaluate its effectiveness, aiming to improve medication adherence, psychotic symptoms, self-efficacy, and overall well-being in these patients. Methods༚The plan was formulated through literature review, cross-sectional survey, and expert consultation. From June to November 2025, 82 pairs of hospitalized schizophrenia patients from the psychiatry department of a tertiary-level Class A hospital in Zunyi City were convenience-sampled as study subjects. Using random number generation, they were randomly assigned by ward to an intervention group (n = 41) and a control group (n = 41). The intervention group received the program in addition to routine psychological care and health education, while the control group received only routine psychological care and health education. Differences in psychiatric symptoms, medication adherence, and self-efficacy were compared between groups at admission, discharge, and one month post-discharge.
Results:: All 82 patients completed the trial (n = 41 intervention; n = 41 control). After 8 weeks of intervention, the intervention group demonstrated significantly higher medication adherence scores, lower Positive and Negative Symptom Scale (PANSS) scores, higher self-efficacy levels, and greater overall well-being compared to the control group ( P P < 0.05). Telephone follow-ups were conducted at 1 month post-discharge,…
How strong is the evidence?
Evidence Hub reads this as a randomized trial, done in people. Its evidence level is 2 of 5 (High · randomized trial). Randomized trials of a reasonable size are the strongest single-study design. Reported size: 82 participants or records.
