Gut Microbial Diversity and Composition in Athletes and Sedentary Adults: A Secondary Metagenomic Analysis
Abstract
: The gut microbiome is a biological interface that has been recognized as playing a crucial role in the relationship between nutrition, metabolism, immunity, and physical performance. While athletes and sedentary adults can be contrasted extensively when it comes to training exposure and lifestyle, the implications of these differences on simple and interpretable microbiome metrics are pertinent to sports science and human biology. The current study is a focused secondary analysis of open access fecal shotgun metagenomic data and examined the diversity and composition of the gut microbiome in athletes and sedentary adults. A balanced set (50 athletes and 50 sedentary adults) of 100 samples was extracted from the supplementary data from a published metagenomic study. To evaluate the alpha diversity, Shannon diversity was calculated as the primary alpha diversity index
