A Case Series Insights: Disseminated Pneumococcal Pneumonia in Vulnerable Populations
Abstract
Streptococcus pneumoniae
is the leading pathogen of lower respiratory tract infections, accounting for significant case fatalities worldwide. In this case series, we present three notable cases of microbiologically confirmed pneumococcal pneumonia, complicating to secondary bacteremia in immunocompromised patients with no history of pneumococcal vaccination at a tertiary care hospital. Blood analytes and chest radiological findings also corroborated the infectious etiology. The antimicrobial susceptibility patterns from both sputum or endotracheal tube suction specimens and blood cultures for each case, are discussed here, aligning with other studies regarding the emergence of resistant strains. Therefore, timely diagnosis, antimicrobial stewardship, and pneumococcal vaccination, as per recommendations, are essential to combat this preventable infection.
How strong is the evidence?
Evidence Hub reads this as a case series, done in people. Its evidence level is 5 of 5 (Very low · case / narrative / animal / in vitro / in silico). Case reports, narrative reviews, and animal, cell or computer-model studies give the weakest evidence for human health.
