Abstract

Klebsiella quasipneumoniae has been associated with severe infections and can harbor antimicrobial resistance genes, including carbapenemases. This species is indistinguishable from K. pneumoniae using conventional clinical microbiology methods; therefore, its true prevalence remains unknown. This study aimed to characterize the genome of a carbapenem-resistant, NDM-1-producing Klebsiella quasipneumoniae subsp. quasipneumoniae (KQPN) isolate recovered from Costa Rica and to place it within an international phylogenomic context. Whole-genome sequencing assigned the isolate to ST3028 and confirmed the presence of blaNDM-1. The contig harboring this carbapenemase was assigned to a putative IncC plasmid and showed high identity with IncC plasmids previously described in NDM-1-producing K. pneumoniae isolates from Costa Rica. Phylogenomic analysis of publicly available KQPN genomes revealed a genetically diverse population covering multiple continents and sequence types, with blaNDM-1 distributed across different genetic backgrounds. Our findings contribute to a better understanding of the circulation and genomic epidemiology of antimicrobial resistance in KQPN and support the surveillance of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella in Latin America.
