Prevalence of Legionella pneumophila among patients suffering from pneumonia: a Middle East systematic review and meta-analysis
Abstract
Up to 90% of Legionella infections are caused by Legionella pneumophila including Legionnaires’ diseases, community-acquired pneumonia and nosocomial pneumonia. Therefore, the present systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to study the epidemiology of L. pneumophila retrieved from patients with pneumonia and respiratory tract infections from the Middle East. We searched PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases with restriction dates (restricting the search on cross-sectional studies published since 2000–20 April 2020), and languages (only English) with following Medical Subject Headings (Mesh) and text words; ‘Legionellosis’, ‘Legionnaire’, ‘Legionnaires disease’, ‘Legionellosis’, ‘Legionella’, ‘Legionella pneumophila’, ‘Middle East’, ‘Kuwait’, ‘Yemen’, ‘Iran’, ‘clinical samples’, ‘Turkey’, ‘Egypt’, ‘Saudi Arabia’, ‘Qatar’, ‘Syria’, ‘Lebanon’, ‘Bahrain’, ‘Iraq’, ‘Cyprus’, ‘Palestine’, ‘Israel’, ‘Jordan’, ‘Oman’ and ‘United Arab Emirates’, ‘respiratory symptoms’ and ‘pneumonia’. Descriptive statistics were computed using Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software (version 3.3.070 Biostat, Inc.). We calculated estimates of the combined prevalence of each variable by producing a forest plot was depicted for calculating the estimates of the combined prevalence of each variable. This study showed that the prevalence of L. pneumophila in clinical samples collected from patients was varied between 1.6 and 28.1%. The pooled prevalence of L. pneumophila in clinical samples was…
How strong is the evidence?
Evidence Hub reads this as a meta-analysis, done in people. Its evidence level is 1 of 5 (Highest · pooled evidence). Pooled evidence from several studies sits at the top of the evidence pyramid.
