Determination of cross-sections for the 130Xe(n,p)130I reaction in the neutron energy range of 13-15 MeV using isotope targets
Abstract
In this study, the cross-sections of the 130Xe(n,p)130I reaction were determined at neutron energies of 13.56 ± 0.16 MeV and 14.92 ± 0.20 MeV using the activation technique with a high-purity, highly enriched (99.957%) 130Xe gas target. The neutron irradiation was performed at the China Academy of Engineering Physics (CAEP), where the 3H(d,n)4He reaction acts as the neutron source, with incident deuterium energies precisely tuned to produce quasi-monoenergetic neutrons. The activity of the produced 130I was quantified via high-resolution, high-purity germanium detectors (HPGe), employing five well-resolved γ-rays of 417.932 keV, 536.066 keV, 668.536 keV, 739.512 keV, and 1157.43 keV energies. Cross-section values were derived from absolute efficiency-calibrated measurements, incorporating corrections for detector dead time, decay during irradiation and counting, sample geometry, coincidence summing, and self-attenuation in the gaseous target. The results were compared with the reported literature values, the theoretical calculations obtained using TALYS-2.0, systematics, and evaluation data. It is worth noting that the cross-section values reported here have a lower uncertainty than the previously reported values. These accurate cross-sectional data will be extremely useful in theoretical research, technical applications, data evaluation, and database development.
