Abstract

Abstract Physics education continues to be shaped by tensions between abstract scientific knowledge and the cultural worlds in which learners live. When school physics is presented as universal, decontextualized content, its connections to students' everyday experiences and local knowledge systems often become obscured. This study examines Tanean Lanjhang, a traditional Madurese Indonesia kinship-based settlement system, as a culturally organized site through which scientific meaning can be interpreted and recontextualized in physics education. Using a qualitative ethnographic approach, data were generated through literature reviews, field observations, semi-structured interviews, and focus group discussions with expert lecturers. The analysis explored how the spatial organization, building orientation, and environmental responses embedded in Tanean Lanjhang articulate forms of practical knowledge that resonate with key physics concepts. The findings show that Tanean Lanjhang embodies culturally situated understandings of airflow, pressure differences, heat transfer, natural ventilation, lighting distribution, and thermal balance, all of which contribute to environmental comfort within the settlement. Rather than treating local wisdom merely as an illustrative context for pre-given scientific ideas, this study argues that Tanean Lanjhang constitutes an epistemic resource through which physics can be interpreted as socially and culturally meaningful knowledge. The study…
