κ-methodology for the study of scientific leadership: a bibliometric application in physics
Abstract
Abstract This paper investigates scientific leadership using an extensive dataset of publications in physics. To this end, an index-based methodology is implemented to capture the role fulfilled in publications, productive volume, and citation-based impact within the field. These indices incorporate a normalizing element consisting of the number of communities identified by the Leiden algorithm. Consequently, a phase plane is introduced to facilitate the historical analysis of changes occurring in the density of scientific leadership in physics. The findings are consistent with the social aspects of science. Furthermore, the $\kappa$-methodology is generalizable to other evolutionary contexts of scientific leadership and is also useful for comparing development levels at specific points in time.
