Beyond Noether: Could the Second Law of Thermodynamics Reflect a Fundamental Property of Spacetime?

2026

Abstract

Noether's theorem fundamentally changed the conceptual framework of theoretical physics by demonstrating that conservation laws, long regarded as independent principles, arise from the underlying symmetries of spacetime. Together with Einstein's geometrical interpretation of gravitation, this development established a broader methodological pattern in which apparently fundamental laws were recognized as consequences of deeper structural properties of spacetime. This paper asks whether the Second Law of Thermodynamics may likewise originate from a more fundamental property of spacetime. The Second Law occupies a distinctive position among the fundamental principles of physics: although its empirical validity is firmly established, its ultimate conceptual origin remains the subject of continuing investigation. The paper does not propose such a theory or attempt to derive the Second Law from spacetime geometry. Instead, it examines whether this question is scientifically well motivated in light of the historical development of modern theoretical physics and the growing body of research linking spacetime, gravitation, entropy, and thermodynamics. The article argues that, although no such explanation is currently known, formulating this question represents a legitimate direction for future investigation.
