Comparative UV-visible spectroscopic investigation of TWO marketed anti-allergic drugs: montelukast and levocetirizine
Abstract
Allergic disorders including allergic rhinitis, urticaria, bronchial asthma, and seasonal allergies represent a significant global health burden, necessitating effective pharmacological management with anti-allergic agents. Montelukast, a selective cysteinyl leukotriene receptor antagonist, and Levocetirizine, a third-generation H1 histamine receptor antagonist, are two widely prescribed anti-allergic drugs with distinct mechanisms of action. UV-Visible spectrophotometry is a simple, rapid, cost-effective, and widely employed analytical technique in pharmaceutical analysis, particularly for quantitative estimation and quality control of drug substances in pharmaceutical formulations. The present study was undertaken to perform a comparative UV-Visible spectrophotometric investigation of Montelukast (Montair, 10 mg, Cipla Ltd.) and Levocetirizine (Levocet, 5 mg, Cipla Ltd.) from their respective marketed tablet formulations. Tablet powder of each drug was accurately weighed, dissolved in methanol, and stock solutions were prepared. Serial dilutions of 1–5 mL were prepared from respective stock solutions and absorbance was measured using a Labtronics UV-Visible Double Beam Spectrophotometer. The maximum absorption wavelength (λmax) of both Montelukast and Levocetirizine was found to be 200 nm. Calibration curves constructed over the volume range of 1–5 mL demonstrated good linearity with correlation coefficient (R²) values of 0.9785 and 0.9680 for Montelukast and…
