Abstract
The main aim of the current Thesis is to study the problems of the radiation protection in a radio-diagnostic facility and the models used for calculating the required shielding according to guidance of Radiation Protection Regulations. The required reduction of radiation dose, in irradiation areas or in neighboring areas, to which the professional staff, patients and ordinary visitors are located, is achieved through the use of adequate shielding within the permissible limits.
In this Thesis, at the first two chapters, a review is made regarding the discovery and properties of ionizing radiation, the damage that can be inflicted by ionizing radiation to both the cells of an organism and the general health. In addition, the directives on radiation protection from International Organizations, as well as from the Hellenic Atomic Energy Commission, are mentioned. Subsequently, a reference is made to the basic objective of radiation shielding and the general know-how of the effective shielding of an X-ray diagnostic facility.
Regarding the topics found in the third chapter of this study, a reference is made for numerous definitions or concepts, such as primary radiation, scattered or leakage radiation, primary / secondary shielding, Workload, Use factor, Occupancy factor, relative X-ray yield (K0), air Kermas, as well as variations of the equations used in the calculation of radio-protection. Also, a comparison between older and modern models has been made, where the armor…
