Abstract

This paper presents the design and validation of a compact X-ray computed tomography system for educational use, integrating mechanical, control, and software design to enable targeted experimental activities. The sample analyzed is exposed to X-rays emitted by a source and its projection is captured by a detector panel. By changing the relative positions of the panel and the sample, various imaging conditions can be explored. The mechanical framework features an internal structure incorporating a rotating disk that holds the sample and a detector panel. The translational and rotational movements of these dynamic components are actuated by stepper and brushless motors, whose sizing is addressed in the control section, allowing for accurate motion synchronization when the sample rotates during tomographic scans. The lead-based shielding, dimensioned according to NCRP-147 standards, provides effective protection against primary and secondary X-ray emissions. The GUI enables graphical post-processing operations, providing users with an intuitive learning environment.
