A Design Exploration to Address Breast Cancer A qualitative study considering the context of Bangladesh
Abstract
Breast cancer, a major cancer for women in Bangladesh is considered in terms of technology design in this work. To understand the design requirements, we have conducted a qualitative study on 12 groups consisting of 147 participants (107 female, 40 male) with a diverse age range, economic condition, and location. The study showed a clear lack of engagement considering the awareness and actions to take around the problem of breast cancer. It showed structural, social, and religious barriers women face to access information and resources; the work showed a lack of agency of women for financial barriers and social norms, and finally, the desire to seek changes. These findings were aligned to Naila Kabeer’s empowerment framework that shows access to resources, agency to make decisions are needed towards empowerment. The research provides a design guideline and a discussion around future directions.
